YRC Freight, which plans to close a St.Louis truck terminal as part of a larger consolidation, told the state of Missouri that it plans to permanently lay off 491 workers.

The company filed a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notice Monday with the state. In a letter to Randy Cottrell, manager of dislocated worker programs for the state Division of Workforce Development, YRC officials said all affected employees have been notified and were expected to be let go beginning Tuesday through May 25.

The number of jobs being eliminated is higher than the 128 St. Louis positions that Teamsters said earlier this week would be lost.

According to a YRC plan leaked this week by the Teamsters for a Democratic Union, an independent dissenting union group, 64 local drivers and 54 long-haul road drivers at the St. Louis terminal would be out of work, as well as seven mechanics and three office positions, for a total of 128 jobs lost.

System wide, YRCs proposal calls for a reduction of 760 dock, cartage, shop and office jobs, along with 452 road jobs at locations that will be closed or reduced, while adding 639 cartage and 343 road jobs at other terminals.

Officials with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters had advised members Tuesday not to schedule meetings on the proposal until further notice.

YRC Freight is part of Overland Park, Kan.-based YRC Worldwide, which reported 2012 consolidated operating revenue of $4.85 billion.
